会員・会友の皆様、こんにちは。
いつもNPO法人「ブリスベン青年団」をお引き立ていただき有難うございます。
日本のように季節の移ろいを感じながら暦とともに季節を過ごしていくのとは大違いのブリスベンの気候でも、暦（というよりはカレンダー）の上では１２月から夏。毎年ながら、12月1日の朝にラジオで「今日から夏です」と言われて「え！？」って感じてしまうのですが、とにもかくにもブリスベンに夏がやってきました。それがゆえに今回のニュースレターも「夏」号としてお届けしている次第。それにしても、師走なのに夏・・・この季節感のズレだけは、何年いても慣れない私ですが、皆さんはどうでしょうか。
さて、突然ですが、ここで宣言。
私達「ブリスベン青年団」は、今後、４半期に一度確実にこのニュースレターを皆様にお届けしていくことをこの場を借りてお約束します。そうすることで、少しでも多くのブリスベンの日系コミュニティの成員の皆様方に、私たち「青年団」の存在と活動を知ってもらいたい、興味を持ってもらいたい―そのための重要なツールとして、このニュースレターを日系コミュニティの皆様に「楽しみにしてもらえる」媒体に育てて行きたいと考えています。そのためには、皆様に喜んでもらえるコンテンツが不可欠。さらには、参加型にすることで、皆様との距離感を（ソーシャル・ディスタンスは守りつつ（笑））縮めていければ・・・などと、色々と頭を捻っているところです。
そして、今回の「青年団ニュースレター夏号」からの新たな試みとして、会員の皆様から寄稿をいただくことになりました。その第１弾、これからお読みいただくことになる、おそらくはブリスベンで一番日本のプロ野球に詳しいオージーであろう青年団メンバーのスコットの野球愛溢れるコラムで、スコットの熱い思いを感じ取ってもらえれば嬉しく思います。また、自薦他薦問いません、「私も何か書いてみたい」という方がいらっしゃいましたら、ご遠慮なくお知らせください。文章に自信がないと云う方でも、担当編集（という名の私）がお力になりますのでご安心ください。
2020（令和２）年は、少し乱暴な言い方かもしれないですが、とんでもない１年でした。山火事に始まり、コロナ禍に暮れゆく、そのとんでもない年もあと１ヶ月少々。幸い、この国、そして私達ブリスベンがあるクィーンズランド州は比較的、平穏な年の瀬を迎えることが出来そうです。本当に有り難いことです。この誰の記憶にも残るであろう波乱の年の年忘れは、ブリスベン青年団の「年忘れ寄合」（当ニュースレター内のお知らせにて詳細をご確認ください）。毎年恒例の「大忘年会」ではなく、会員でない方も気楽にご参加いただけるカジュアルな場を会員有志が企画してくれましたので、皆様お誘い合わせの上でご参加ください。その場での交流が、青年団のコミュニティ活動の新たなエネルギーの産まれるきっかけとなれば有り難い話です。
来る2021（令和3）年も、ブリスベン青年団として、色々仕掛けて行きたいと思います。そのためには、皆様のご支援と積極的な活動へのご参画が不可欠ですので、皆様にもっと青年団が身近に感じてもらい、私も何か手伝おうと思っていただけるようにメンバー一同、知恵を絞って頑張っていければと思います。
今回のこのレターには、興味深いお知らせやコラムが盛り沢山。皆様に、その全てに目を通していただけるよう、私の挨拶は冗長にならない程度で、この辺で収めておくことにします。
来る年が、ブリスベン日系コミュニティの皆様とそのご家族にとって良い年となりますよう願っております。まだこの挨拶には少し早い気もしますが、「皆様、どうか、良いお年をお迎えください」という一年にこの時期にしか使わない挨拶で締めさせていただくことにします。

President’s message
Public newsletter Summer 2020 Edition
Dear members and friends,
Thank you for your continued support of the Non-Profit Organisation, Brisbane Seinendan Inc. Whilst the calendar says it’s December, the sense of time and seasons passing is completely different in Brisbane because this is when Summer starts! On the morning of December 1st every year, the radio announcement that it’s the first day of Summer still takes me by surprise.
Regardless, it is undoubtedly Summer in Brisbane now!
As such, this newsletter has been labelled the ‘Summer Issue’. Despite this and after many years of experiencing this seasonal shift, I am still coming to grips with Summer falling in December – I wonder if it’s the same for everyone else…
Anyway moving along, I am please to announce that the Brisbane Seinendan have taken on the endeavour to deliver this newsletter to you four times a year. By doing so, we hope that it will help us reach many members of the Japanese community in Brisbane, so that they can learn more about and take an interest in the activities of our “Seinendan” (lit. group of youths). We anticipate that this newsletter will become a medium that everyone in the Japanese community can enjoy. To that end, content that keeps everyone happy and entertained is vital to this outcome. In my mind this is one way to keep us closer together, whilst of course we continue to maintain ‘social distancing’!
For something new in this “Seinendan Newsletter – Summer Issue”, we have received contributions from one of our members. Our first instalment is from Scott, who probably knows more about Japanese Pro-Baseball than any other Aussie in Brisbane – I hope you can feel his passion in his article. If anyone has any suggestions for future articles or is thinking that they would like to contribute to a future issue, please get in touch with us! Even if you are not confident in writing an article, please be assured that I will assist you as the ‘editor in charge’.
Whilst this may sound a little brash, 2020 (2nd year of Reiwa) was a ridiculous year. Opening with the catastrophic bush fires, the Corona Virus swept in less than a month following that. We are very fortunate that despite these circumstances Australia, in particular the state of Queensland and where we are in Brisbane, is likely to see out the rest of this year peacefully.
For this I’m really grateful.
To help put this turbulent year behind us, a year that will be remembered by everyone, Brisbane Seinendan is holding a “Year Forgetfulness Party” (see the announcement in this newsletter for more details). A committee of members have volunteered their time to plan this casual evening which is open to non-members, in place of our traditional “Big Bonenkai (lit. forget the year party)” which we were unable to hold this year. Please join us and feel free to bring your friends. We hope that new friendships made here will be the catalyst for new energy and interest in the Seinendan’s ongoing community activities.
Next year, 2021 (3rd year of Reiwa), we have a range of things in mind for Brisbane Seinendan. Your continued support and active participation in our activities is always greatly appreciated, and we ask you to keep lending us your wisdom and skills and help us wherever you can.
This newsletter is full of interesting news and columns, so for that matter I’ll round up my greetings, so that you can move on to reading them. We hope that the coming year will be a good year for the Japanese community in Brisbane and their families.
Whilst it feels like this may be a little early, I will conclude with a sentiment that can only be used at this time of the year –
“Please, everyone, please have a good year.”
