Matsuri Brisbane is an annual Japanese cultural and community festival organised by Brisbane Seinendan Japanese Community since 2018.
Our aim is to create a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable event that encourages participation,
celebrates diversity, and strengthens engagement with the local Japanese community.
Since its launch, Matsuri Brisbane has grown rapidly—welcoming approximately 8,000 attendees in its inaugural year. Although the festival was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, it continued to grow every year thereafter, and by 2025 it welcomed approximately 30,000 attendees.
The festival plays an important role within Brisbane’s multicultural landscape.
It offers the broader community an opportunity to experience authentic Japanese culture,
enjoy traditional and contemporary performances, savour Japanese cuisine,
and connect with local Japanese businesses, artists, and community groups.
Funds raised through the festival are reinvested to support the following year’s Matsuri.
Any surplus proceeds are allocated to community projects and initiatives that help promote
cultural exchange, support Japanese residents, and strengthen the Japanese community in Brisbane.
